Mama Samba
Hand-made, fair-trade, earth-kind products from Brazil

Our products run the gamut from handbags made from old coffee filters and PET plastic (you have to see it to believe it) to remote-control organizers hand-painted with scenes from the picturesque city of Rio. And the people who make the products are just as unique. Every one of Mama Samba's handcrafted items is infused with the story of the artisans and the rich Brazilian culture that inspired the piece.

The People are as important as the Products

A cooperative of retirees, banded together to supplement their low fixed incomes, blends newspaper, eggshells, onion skins, leaves and more to create one-of-a-kind, Afro-Brazilian themed notepads and picture frames that are kind to the planet. Unable to secure unemployment, an immigrant couple from Uruguay, puts themselves to work creating whimsical, universally-themed sculptures and incense holders from seeds, stones, spoons and forks. A woman learns the traditional Brazilian decorative technique "fuxico" from her mother, and spins it off into a fun, youthful product line ranging from headbands to change purses. These are among the many marginalized artisans Mama Samba and its partners work with. We give them fair prices, product development assistance, and access to new market opportunities; they give us high-quality, eco-friendly products that are as unique and beautiful as snowflakes. That's what we call "fair trade."
