Shea butter is the new hot ingredient in beauty products as a result of the sleek, creamy finish that it gives to the skin. Yet many people don’t know the source of this product or its myriad healing properties.

Shea butter, or beurre de karité, in French, is extracted from the fruit of a giant, fire-resistant tree that grows in the rural countryside throughout Africa. Though used for centuries in sub-Saharan Africa, the Scotch doctor Mungo Park “discovered” this wonder-product on his West African wanderings and gave it its current name. Indeed, much to the dismay of European botanists, the tree refuses to propagate anywhere outside of its native Africa.

The karé, as the tree is called in the language of the Fulah people that live through west and central Africa, is thought to be a magic tree. Women are responsible for guarding this special tree, as they alone can appease the karé’s spirit with their songs and dances. It is also women who are responsible for gathering the shea nuts and taking it through the many steps necessary to transform it to the final product, including boiling, drying, grilling and grinding the nuts. Most women work together in cooperatives to pool their resources and simply enjoy each other’s company while working.

Our product is purchased directly from producers in Guinea to ensure the highest-quality product while also helping producers to obtain the highest possible price by cutting out any middlemen.
